Team Julian's Crushing Cancer: 1000km to Rome! is a self-funded 642 mile walk to raise funds and awareness for rare cancer research. By walking the Via Francigena we hope to beat cancer to the ground.

Overview

About half of all people with cancer have a rare form of the disease. Rare cancers include many types you’ve likely heard of, such as leukemia and lymphoma, thyroid, ovarian, brain, and pancreatic cancers, as well as all pediatric cancers. It is often challenging to secure funding for rare cancer research, which is why support from Cycle for Survival is so crucial. Every dollar you give will go directly to innovative research and clinical trials at MSK.

Team Julian's Crusade Against Cancer is a self-funded 642 mile walk to raise funds and awareness for rare cancer research. By walking the Via Francigena we hope to beat cancer to the ground. Please donate to help us make a difference.

Our walk goes from Switzerland’s Bourg St Pierre into Italy and on to Rome. The full Via Francigena starts in Canterbury, England and was considered an important bridge between Anglo-Saxon and Latin European cultures.

We take this journey for inspiration and motivation. We raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancers and to find cures for the most challenging forms of childhood cancers. As we walk, we remember loved ones  especially Julian and Shan whose memories propel us forward.

Julian, was Cristy’s youngest son, an Academic All-American Water Polo player on the Santa Clara University team at the time of his osteosarcoma diagnosis in 2016. Osteosarcoma is a rare form of bone cancer that afflicts children and adolescents. Julian passed away from his disease in 2017, at the age of 20.

Shan was a good friend and mother of four, whose love of life never diminished in spite of her eight year battle with colon cancer. Shân died in 2022.

Team Julian honors the lives of Julian and Shân by continuing the fight against rare cancers.

Since 2007, the Cycle for Survival community has enabled hundreds of doctors and scientists at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) to pursue bold ideas aimed at transforming rare cancer treatment. Funding from Cycle for Survival has led to the FDA approval of new drugs, lifesaving clinical trials, and state-of-the-art DNA sequencers that are aiding in key cancer breakthroughs.
